HVS pledges to support young people’s journey to the workplace

Harris Voluntary Service recently signed the DYW pledge, making a commitment to develop and support opportunities for young people to experience the world of work.

DYW (Developing the Young Workforce) Outer Hebrides aims to support young people as they move from education into the world of work.

The pledge highlights local organisations who have agreed to play their part in preparing young people for the workplace, whether through sharing knowledge, hosting placements or providing projects and volunteering opportunities.

“In a small community like ours, it’s so important to showcase what we have on our doorstep,” said HVS Manager Sandra Fraser. “With an ageing community and depopulation being real issues, HVS is keen to help with increasing the skills of our young people and focus on the opportunities available here to help them to stay in Harris. We are only too happy to support DYW in their role of helping to prepare young people for the world of work, whether by hosting work experience placements, providing volunteering opportunities, or visiting schools.”

Since signing the pledge, HVS has hosted two young people for work and volunteer experiences, with a third project planned for this Autumn.
